A five-storey hostel in Delhi collapsed, trapping dozens of students and killing at least three. Rescuers are working to free those still inside the building.
The hostel, known as Hostel Daze, was located in the Satya Niketan neighbourhood of south-west Delhi. The collapse occurred around 13:30 local time on Sunday, with eyewitnesses reporting that as many as 50 people were inside when the building came down. At least eight people have been rescued so far, while three others are in critical condition.
Construction work was reportedly underway in the basement of the building, which had been under a 100-year lease. A nearby shop owner said the leaseholder had undertaken excavation work to expand the hostel and increase income, but the pillars below were weak. The National Students' Union of India has called for an investigation into the collapse and for those responsible to be held accountable.
