Ukraine reports six energy facilities struck by Russia hours after US President Donald Trump announced an energy ceasefire, according to President Volodymyr Zelensky.

Emergency services responded to a Russian drone strike on a residential building in Kharkiv, north-eastern Ukraine, on Monday. Russia struck six Ukrainian energy facilities hours after Trump announced the two countries had agreed to an energy ceasefire, Zelensky said. Blackouts occurred in Izyum after a Russian strike destroyed power grids, according to Ukrinform, while energy and railway infrastructure in western Ukraine was also targeted overnight.

Zelensky stated 33 people were injured in the strikes on energy facilities across the country. He said Russia was "unwilling to accept an energy ceasefire." Ukraine's state-owned grid operator Ukrenergo reported new power cuts in Kharkiv, Donetsk, and Zaporizhzhia due to damage from Russian attacks. Electricity rationing has been introduced in parts of Ukraine to avoid overloading damaged equipment.

Why it matters

Ukraine says strikes on energy sites continue despite Trump's ceasefire announcement, but an EU-wide target does not establish an individual country's supply position or consumer-price effect.
