A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck Panama, damaging buildings and causing widespread shaking. Tsunami warnings were issued for neighboring countries, and videos of destruction circulated online.

The earthquake occurred just before 15:00 local time on Friday, with an epicenter about 6.2 miles from the town of Pitaloza Arriba in south-central Panama. The US Geological Survey reported that about 4.6 million people felt moderate to severe tremors. Verified footage showed collapsed buildings in Penonomé and Soná, including a maternity ward in Panama City that was evacuated during the tremors.

Several large aftershocks were also reported near the initial earthquake, potentially complicating the situation. The quake occurred at a depth of 12km, which is shallow enough to cause more severe effects on the surface. Damage in the capital appears to be limited to debris falling from roofs, though the full extent of the damage is not yet clear.
