Dutch intelligence warns that smart car features like microphones and GPS could be exploited by hostile states for espionage, raising concerns over Chinese imports in the UK.

Dutch intelligence has warned that smart car features, such as microphones, cameras, and GPS, could be exploited by hostile states for espionage. The AIVD emphasized that modern vehicles are increasingly equipped with digital systems that collect data about occupants, the vehicle itself, and the surrounding environment. These systems are connected to the internet, making them potentially accessible to unauthorized parties, including state actors. The agency noted that while these features offer practical benefits, they also pose significant risks if misused.

Chinese car brands now make up 15% of new car registrations in the UK, with models from MG, BYD, and Jaecoo driving the growth. These vehicles are popular due to their affordability and advanced in-car technology. Concerns have been raised over potential data access, particularly given China’s national intelligence law, which requires companies to assist state intelligence services when requested. In response, the UK Ministry of Defence has taken measures to mitigate security risks, including banning vehicles with Chinese components from sensitive military locations such as RAF Wyton and the SBS headquarters in Dorset.
