Chinese stock markets have lost trillions of dollars in value as concerns grow over the sustainability of the AI boom and increasing competition with the United States.

The STAR 50 Index, which tracks technology and innovation companies on the Shanghai stock exchange, has fallen 40% since June. Other major indexes have also dropped by about 20% over the same period. Bloomberg estimates that $2.4tn has been wiped from the Chinese stock market since May.

AI stocks make up over 40% of the stock market value in China and Hong Kong, according to Goldman Sachs. Despite significant government investment, including a 60bn yuan state-backed AI fund, weak consumer demand and US restrictions on Chinese technology have contributed to the decline. The US has banned humanoid robots from China and is considering restrictions on Chinese components in data centres.
