Editorial image for Kenya reports second Ebola death linked to first case

Kenya's Health Ministry confirmed a second Ebola death, a 65-year-old woman who was a close relative of the first patient. The woman died while in quarantine in Nairobi.

The woman began showing symptoms 10 days ago while in quarantine and received supportive care at an infectious disease unit in Nairobi. The ministry stated that medical personnel did everything possible to save her life and that a safe and dignified burial would be arranged in consultation with her family.

Kenya's first Ebola case was announced on October 6. The virus was found in a 40-year-old Kenyan man living in Congo, who travelled to Kenya via Uganda, arriving on October 3. Of some 135 identified contacts, 118 were placed in quarantine, with eight testing positive. Seven people continue to receive treatment for the illness in Kenya, all within one cluster with no evidence of community spread.

Why it matters

The second death highlights the risks faced by close contacts of Ebola patients and underscores the need for continued vigilance in containment efforts.
