A volcanic eruption near Jakarta has led to the temporary closure of eight airports, stranding over 170,000 passengers and disrupting international and domestic flights.
Indonesian authorities closed eight airports after detecting volcanic ash in the airspace near Jakarta following eruptions from Anak Krakatau. Soekarno-Hatta International Airport was the first to be closed on Sunday morning. The transport ministry reported that 1,558 flights have been delayed, with airports remaining closed until midnight.
The volcano erupted late on Friday, producing continuous seismic activity, lava fountains, and loud noises. Two additional eruptions occurred early on Sunday. The ash reached heights of 20,000ft (6,000m) east of the volcano and 50,000ft (15,000m) west of the volcano. Flights to and from Singapore, Doha, Sydney, and Kuala Lumpur have been disrupted.
