A Tennessee woman has filed a $10m lawsuit against Fargo police, alleging that AI facial recognition wrongly led to her arrest and six-month detention for bank theft charges that were later dropped.

Angela Lipps, 50, was arrested at gunpoint in July 2025 while babysitting in Tennessee and held for nearly six months before charges were dismissed. She claims she was wrongly identified through AI facial recognition software that matched her social media photo to a suspect in North Dakota bank fraud cases.

The lawsuit alleges that a fake ID used by the actual suspect was the source of the facial recognition error. Lipps was held in jail without bail for four months before being extradited to North Dakota, where she was detained for two additional months. The charges were dropped after her lawyer provided evidence proving her presence in Tennessee at the time of the alleged crime.
