Seven Ethiopian rebel groups have formed a new alliance, aiming to remove the government in Addis Ababa and establish a transitional administration.
The alliance includes the Fano militia in Amhara, the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), the Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF), and four other smaller groups, collectively named the Alliance for Survival. The groups accuse Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed's government of causing 'war, genocide, mass destruction, and utter poverty' and claim Ethiopia is at risk of disintegration.
Ethiopia has faced prolonged conflict in Oromia and Amhara, with renewed tensions in Tigray, where a two-year civil war ended in 2022 through an African Union peace deal. The new alliance spans six of Ethiopia's 12 regional states, including Ogaden, Afar, and Benishangul-Gumuz. Federal authorities have not yet responded to the coalition's formation.
