A 30-year-old Australian hiker has been missing for nearly two weeks after setting out on a solo trek in Peru’s Huayhuash mountain range, prompting a large-scale search by private rescue crews.
Jordan Yap, an experienced hiker from Melbourne, last made contact with friends and family on 14 September before beginning a 10-day solo trek along the Cordillera Huayhuash circuit. He was last seen near the start of the trail, which is known for its challenging high-altitude terrain.
Yap failed to check back into the Krusty Hostel in Huaraz, missed a scheduled flight from Lima to Cusco, and did not use a satellite beacon he had with him. His family has hired the local mountain rescue organisation Socorro Andino Peruano to assist with the search, which has so far found no trace of him.
