Rains are expected to intensify overnight, with the city bracing for one-third of its annual rainfall over the next 24 hours. Despite being downgraded to a tropical depression, several districts in Beijing have activated the highest level of emergency flood responses. The Ministry of Water Resources has dispatched personnel to affected areas in Beijing and Tianjin. Over 250 flood-control teams are on standby in Beijing, with preparations underway for flood barriers at subway stations, hospitals, and elderly care facilities.
Heavy downpours are forecast from Tuesday evening through Thursday, with cumulative rainfall exceeding 150mm in 24 hours. This compares to Beijing’s average annual rainfall of 528mm. Four districts on the outskirts of Beijing have activated level 1 emergency flood responses. In Mentougou, a mountainous district, the highest level of flood emergency alert has been issued, advising residents to stay indoors and avoid travel to mountainous areas and rivers. The typhoon has traveled nearly 6,000km before making landfall, affecting eastern China and prompting the relocation of over a million people for safety.
