U.S. Military Base in Saudi Arabia Expands to Strengthen Counter-Iran Efforts

The military site near the Red Sea, known as Logistical Support Area Jenkins, has recently transformed from a mostly idle location into a significant supply hub, according to an analysis of satellite imagery.

Visible in satellite images since early 2022, the base's development suggests that U.S. military planners have anticipated a potential sustained conflict with Iran. This base, located approximately 20 miles inland from Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea coast, is expected to play a crucial role in transporting and storing supplies, thereby reducing vulnerability to attacks.

Prior to last year, L.S.A. Jenkins had seen little activity, but recent expansions have included enhanced facilities for ammunition storage, troop housing, and improved security measures. Its strategic importance may increase if tensions between the U.S. and Iran escalate, although it remains unclear if the base was involved in recent military operations against Iran.

The U.S. maintains numerous military installations across the Middle East, which require reliable access to supplies. Officials have expressed interest in developing sites along the Red Sea to bolster support for these bases, particularly to mitigate risks from Iranian missile and drone ranges.

Experts note that existing U.S. bases in the Persian Gulf are vulnerable to short-range Iranian missiles. In contrast, the distance of L.S.A. Jenkins from Iran means that any attacks would likely require less accurate medium-range ballistic missiles, providing U.S. defenses with more time to respond.

Despite its advantageous location, L.S.A. Jenkins is still within range of threats from Houthi militants in Yemen, who have previously targeted U.S. naval assets in the Red Sea.

Initially, the base consisted of minimal infrastructure, but recent satellite imagery indicates significant development, including numerous structures, vehicles, and upgraded munitions storage. Government contracts reveal an increase in spending for supplies and personnel at the site, totaling over $3 million since early 2024.

Additionally, two smaller logistical sites have been established at airports in Ta’if and Jeddah, although they are less active than L.S.A. Jenkins. Plans for further expansion at L.S.A. Jenkins include enhancements to nearby airports and additional facilities for troop welfare.

Retired General Frank McKenzie emphasized the strategic advantages of these bases, stating that they improve operational capabilities for U.S. forces while complicating the situation for adversaries.
