A powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia's Flores island, causing at least 53 fatalities and displacing approximately 5,000 people. The quake, which occurred at a depth of 15km, was followed by 341 aftershocks, according to the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). More than 900 homes and hundreds of public buildings have been severely damaged, with reports of collapsed ceilings in hospitals and clinics.

Rescue teams are searching for survivors, while officials note that the full extent of the damage is still being assessed. The region, part of the Pacific 'ring of fire,' has been hit by a second earthquake of magnitude 6.9. At least 3,356 people have been displaced in Sikka province, and 2,078 in Manggarai province. Medical facilities in Manggarai have been damaged, with patients being treated in tents due to the lack of functioning infrastructure.
