Britain Refuses Entry to Hasan Piker and Cenk Uygur

Britain announced the denial of entry to two American commentators, Cenk Uygur and Hasan Piker, citing a potential risk to public order, as part of ongoing debates over free speech and security in the country.

The two activists, who host popular social media channels, were slated to speak at events in Britain this week. They criticized the decision on social media, alleging it was linked to their views on Israel.

The Home Office stated the entry authorizations were canceled because the individuals’ presence “may not be conducive to the public good,” adding that the decision was based solely on an assessment of potential risk to British society. The statement did not reference their Israel criticisms or other views, and officials did not respond to further questions about the case.

Uygur described the move as “absolutely Kafkaesque” and said he intended to speak in Oxford. Piker, Uygur’s nephew, said he had been barred from entering “at the behest of israel.”

Event organizers did not comment, and Israel’s embassy in London declined to comment. Piker has previously denied antisemitism charges, stating his criticisms target Israel’s government, not Jews generally.

On his podcast, Piker described the Hamas-led attack on Israel as a consequence of actions by Israel and the United States governments. The decision comes amid a broader national debate over free speech and rising antisemitism, including a past case involving a U.S. rapper who was denied entry for antisemitic comments.

Security and antisemitism concerns have surged in Britain, with officials weighing limits on speech in the social media era and measures against hateful content and actions. A Jewish protection group welcomed the entry ban for Piker, noting concerns about language that could fuel antisemitism. Opinions among British political figures were divided, with some supporting the decision and others criticizing it as an assault on the right to critique Israel.
