Diabetes in Africa: Growing Risks from Unchecked and Overlooked Disease

A new form of diabetes linked to malnutrition is emerging among patients who cannot afford screening or treatment, as fatalities from diabetes begin to approach those of infectious diseases such as malaria.

The report highlights that financial barriers to healthcare are contributing to the rise of this malnutrition-related diabetes, underscoring broader inequities in access to diagnosis and ongoing care.

Health experts warn that without improved access to prevention, screening, and management, the burden of diabetes could continue to climb in low-income populations, potentially equalling or surpassing deaths from other major infectious diseases.
