Venice Film Festival Announces Inclusion of New Adaptation of Frankenstein

A new version of “Frankenstein,” directed by Guillermo del Toro and featuring Jacob Elordi as the doctor’s monstrous creation, will compete for the Golden Lion at this year’s Venice Film Festival, as announced by the event’s organizers on Tuesday.

Twenty other films will also vie for the prestigious award, including Olivier Assayas’s “The Wizard of the Kremlin,” which focuses on Vladimir V. Putin’s rise to power in Russia and stars Jude Law as the future president. Additionally, Benny Safdie’s “The Smashing Machine,” featuring Dwayne Johnson as a mixed martial artist, is part of the competition.

Yorgos Lanthimos, who won the Golden Lion two years ago with “Poor Things,” will present his new film “Bugonia,” which tells the story of two men who kidnap a company’s chief executive, played by Emma Stone, believing she is an alien intent on destroying Earth.

Other notable entries in the competition include Noah Baumbach’s “Jay Kelly,” a comedy co-written with Greta Gerwig and starring George Clooney as an actor facing an identity crisis; Kathryn Bigelow’s “A House of Dynamite,” set in the White House following a missile launch against the United States and featuring Idris Elba; and Park Chan-wook’s “No Other Choice,” which revolves around an unemployed man who murders job competitors.

A jury chaired by director Alexander Payne, known for “The Holdovers” and “Sideways,” will determine the winner of the Golden Lion.

The winning film, to be announced on the festival’s final day, is expected to create buzz for the upcoming Academy Awards, as the Venice Film Festival has established itself as a significant platform for Oscar contenders.

In addition to the main competition, the festival will showcase various out-of-competition films and sidebar series. High-profile movies featured this year include new works from Luca Guadagnino and Gus Van Sant, as well as a documentary by Werner Herzog titled “Ghost Elephants.”
