At least 204 people were killed when an Air India plane carrying 242 people crashed on Thursday just after takeoff in Ahmedabad, a city in the western Indian state of Gujarat.
This incident marks India’s deadliest aviation disaster since 1996 and is among the deadliest in recent global history.
The aircraft was en route to London, and the airline confirmed the nationalities of those onboard: 169 Indians, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian. It remains unclear whether there were any survivors.
The plane crashed into a medical college campus, resulting in the deaths of five students. The airline reported that injured individuals were transported to hospitals, though it is uncertain if they were passengers or local residents.
Videos from the scene depicted large plumes of smoke rising from the crash site, where the wreckage of the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner was scattered across the area.
Social media footage captured smoke billowing near the airport, and rescue teams were seen working at the crash site.
Emergency workers have been engaged in recovering bodies and clearing debris, while some victims' remains were taken to Civil Hospital for identification.
Firefighters were observed extinguishing the flames and smoke that filled the vicinity following the tragic incident.
