Police Report Stabbing Victims in Hamburg, Germany Are in Stable Condition

Victims of a knife attack on Friday night in Hamburg, Germany, are reported to be in stable condition, according to local police. The investigation into the motive of the woman who stabbed 18 people at the city’s central train station during rush hour is ongoing.

The knife attack injured 18 individuals, aged between 19 and 85, as confirmed by an updated list from the Hamburg police on Saturday. Among the victims, four—three women and one man—sustained life-threatening injuries and are currently hospitalized.

Authorities indicated that the 39-year-old German woman suspected of carrying out the attack appeared to be in a state of mental distress. A judge in Hamburg is expected to decide on Saturday whether she will be admitted to a closed psychiatric ward.

The police reported that the woman was detained with assistance from two commuters shortly after the incident and confirmed that she was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the attack. They also stated that there was no indication the attack was politically motivated.

Hamburg’s central train station, which serves over half a million passengers daily, is noted as Germany’s busiest and one of its most dangerous locations, according to crime statistics.

In an effort to enhance safety, the city established a weapons-free zone several years ago, allowing police greater authority to conduct body searches and remove potential troublemakers from the area.
