"Papua New Guinea will halt the search for landslide victims."

The search and rescue operations in Papua New Guinea's Enga Province, following a devastating landslide, are coming to a close. Nine bodies have been recovered, and aid workers have provided food to around 3,000 people near the site. Geological experts have warned of the risk of further landslides, prompting calls for a larger evacuation. The death toll remains uncertain, with estimates ranging from 200 to 2,000, and the exact number may never be known due to the area's remoteness. Prime Minister James Marape has highlighted the need to relocate almost 7,500 people permanently. The landslide occurred on May 24, destroying the communities of Kaokolam and Tuliparr. The difficulty in accessing the affected area has made it challenging to determine the exact number of victims and displaced individuals. The search for victims is set to end on Friday, and the site will be designated a mass burial site.
