Human-induced warming has significantly increased the likelihood of extreme, multiday downpours in southern Brazil. The recent devastating flooding, which resulted in numerous casualties and displacements, was exacerbated by the region receiving three months' worth of rain in just two weeks. The study, conducted by World Weather Attribution, indicated that the warming climate and the influence of El Niño contributed to the severity of the floods. The damages incurred are estimated to be over $30 billion, making it potentially Brazil's most costly disaster. Despite longstanding scientific warnings, there remains a lack of political action and investment in long-term climate considerations.
