Air quality in parts of Indonesia’s Central and West Kalimantan provinces has reached hazardous levels, with Palangkaraya recording an AQI of 780. A Japan Self-Defense Force transport ship is en route to assist with firefighting efforts.
Air pollution in Central and West Kalimantan provinces on Borneo has reached hazardous levels, according to IQAir, a Swiss air quality monitoring platform. Palangkaraya in Central Kalimantan recorded an air quality index (AQI) of 780 as of noon on Aug 31, making it the most polluted city in Indonesia. Pontianak in West Kalimantan followed with an AQI of 593. An AQI above 300 is classified as hazardous.
Indonesian authorities have initiated reforestation and water infrastructure improvements to rehabilitate areas affected by forest fires. A Japan Self-Defense Force transport ship departed Hiroshima on Sunday and is expected to arrive in Indonesia within one to two weeks to assist with firefighting operations. The mission involves about 600 personnel and three CH-47 helicopters under a bilateral cooperation agreement.
