The Price of Triumph: Israel Defeats Adversaries While Increasing Its Isolation

Israel has shifted its strategic landscape in the Middle East after decades of conflict with neighboring adversaries, including Hezbollah, Hamas, and Iran. The country now perceives a future with significantly reduced immediate threats, thanks to its military actions and alliances.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's military response to the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack, which resulted in 1,200 Israeli deaths and 250 hostages taken, has garnered substantial criticism. Many view Israel's leadership as responsible for perceived war crimes, leading to a global opinion that has turned largely negative. The ongoing conflict in Gaza has resulted in tens of thousands of Palestinian deaths and dire humanitarian conditions.

This scenario has also polarized American support for Israel, fracturing a once bipartisan consensus. Protests and heated debates about Israel's policies have erupted in Congress and on college campuses, escalating antisemitic incidents in both the U.S. and globally.

Despite the violence and international criticism, many Israelis express a sense of security from external threats. However, there is a growing concern about the long-term impact of the conflict on global opinions and the potential radicalization of another generation of Palestinians.

Recent protests, including significant gatherings in London calling for an end to Israeli military actions in Gaza, reflect the increasing activism and solidarity movements promoting the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) campaign against Israel. The BDS movement has gained momentum in response to the ongoing conflict, with some companies reevaluating their ties with Israel.

Public sentiment towards Israel has shifted dramatically, with a Pew Research survey indicating that over half of the populations in 20 countries now hold unfavorable views. Engagement with Gulf states, previously on the rise, has stalled as diplomatic ties have been tied to resolving the Palestinian issue.

In the occupied West Bank, violence has surged amid the Israeli government's support for settlers, leading to intensified military operations against Palestinian militants. Despite challenges, Israel continues to negotiate with Syria for a potential truce, and hopes for normalization with Saudi Arabia may arise after the Gaza conflict concludes.

Public opinion within Israel remains divided. Many citizens express a desire to end the war in Gaza to facilitate the return of hostages, highlighting frustration over the government’s priorities. Young Israelis, while acknowledging some military successes, feel a lingering sense of insecurity following recent events.

As protests against Israel's actions continue worldwide, incidents of violence tied to these protests have also surfaced, demonstrating the growing tensions associated with the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

International condemnation of Israel has intensified, with several countries recognizing Palestinian statehood in an effort to pressure Israel to cease military operations in Gaza. Israeli officials, including military leaders, maintain that Israel's self-defense is of paramount importance, disregarding external opinions.
