In 2023, Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost participated as a delegate at a global assembly of bishops convened by Pope Francis, where the topic of women's potential roles as deacons was discussed.
The cardinal expressed reservations about the idea, stating that “clericalizing women” would not “necessarily” resolve issues within the church and might even introduce new challenges. He emphasized the complexity of altering traditions that have been established for over 2,000 years.
As Pope Leo XIV, Cardinal Prevost is anticipated to encounter continued inquiries regarding the role of women in the church. Throughout his tenure as a Vatican administrator and as a bishop in Latin America, he has generally aligned with Pope Francis’ initiatives to enhance women's roles, albeit with certain limitations.
During his time in the Vatican, Cardinal Prevost oversaw the office responsible for the vetting, selection, and supervision of bishops, supporting Pope Francis’ efforts to elevate women into new leadership positions within that office.
Cardinal Prevost remarked that the involvement of women has made a “noticeable difference” and is a “very fine addition” to the office, as stated in a 2023 interview with The Catholic News Service.
Colleagues from his past as a bishop in Chiclayo, Peru, noted his support for lay women's leadership in social organizations, indicating his progressive approach compared to his more conservative predecessors from the Roman Catholic organization Opus Dei.
According to local priest Rev. Pedro Vásquez, Cardinal Prevost facilitated gradual changes that benefited girls and women in the diocese. Yolanda DÃaz, a teacher and leader of a group aiding migrants and trafficking victims, affirmed that Bishop Prevost expanded opportunities for women, noting that the church has progressively increased their involvement in social pastoral work.
