With ‘Echo,’ Alaqua Cox Smashes Boundaries, and Bad Guys’ Faces

Alaqua Cox, a deaf Indigenous woman from Wisconsin, initially hesitated to audition for the role of Maya Lopez, also known as Echo, in a new Disney+ series. Despite her lack of acting experience, she landed the role and made her professional acting debut in the "Hawkeye" series. Now, she takes the lead in the spinoff miniseries "Echo," seeking vengeance against the criminal boss Kingpin. Cox, who is deaf and Indigenous, felt it was important to portray a character with similar attributes and hopes to break barriers in the industry.
