Ohio Governor Blocks Bill Banning Transition Care for Minors

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine has vetoed a bill that aimed to prohibit transgender minors from receiving transition care, including puberty blockers and hormone therapy. The bill, passed by lawmakers earlier in December, also sought to prevent transgender girls and women from participating in sports teams corresponding with their gender identity. DeWine's rare move as a Republican governor comes amidst a surge in laws restricting the lives of transgender youth across multiple states. The governor's decision followed visits to hospitals and meetings with families affected by gender-affirming care, highlighting the ongoing debate around transgender rights and healthcare access for minors. Although the veto currently allows gender transition treatments to continue in Ohio, the legislature holds the power to override it, potentially impacting the lives of about 100,000 transgender minors in states with similar laws. The ongoing legal battles and policy debates underscore the significance of the issue at a national level.
